Electronic Assistance Corp. out of Red Bank, NJ had bunches of these
left over from a production run and advertised them in the World Radio
Handbook. I know the former chairman of the company, and as of about 5
years ago he still had 2 in his basement.
Another guy I knew bought a container-load of these and fixed them up
or parted them out. Fair Radio Co. also bought dozens when they were
surplused. There was even a brouhaha when DOD was crushing them rather
than disposing them through public sales.
Keep in mind over 50,000 were built. Maybe a couple of thousand
hobbyists out there to absorbed them?
I had 4 working units (2 390 and 2 390A), plus had 2 R-389s over the
years.
I'm now undergoing back treatments, epidurals of steroids and some sort
of stretching of the spine. A cause and effect relationship?
(Of course that doesn't include RA-17s, SP-600s, and the RA-117 to
mention a few other backbreakers that passed through here)(Ooops forgot
the Rohde & Schwarz EK-07 I so highly prized).
Ouch!
