[Milsurplus] Radiosonde

No connection with the seller, but I see on
an auction place, something listed as a
Radiosonde Transmitter.

However the designation is RT-81/AM, which
seems to imply a receiver/transmitter.

The photographs seem to show something a little
more complicated and bulky than a typical radiosonde
transmitter, was this some type of transponder?

Anyone have any more details?

A Google search turned up a short article on
a collector of radiosondes, but no technical
info.
