I believe that the MF/HF C-29/ARC-5 being so rare reflects how little
it was used. The MF/HF/VHF C-30A/ARC-5 is more common likely because
it is a direct replacement without ANY system modification in all
systems using the C-29. It is even the same size and weight.
It is also likely that AN/ARC-5 installations lacking VHF capability
were rare in service use, compared to the usual MF-HF/VHF set up.
The only such set I've ever seen (in a Navy training aircraft) used
only *one* transmitter. A MF/HF one-transmitter AN/ARC-5 installation
would very likely NOT have a transmitter control box. The necessary
connections normally made through a control box to set VOICE mode
and select the transmitter would be made up with jumpers on the plug
at the 18-pin modulator connector. The only transmitter control the
pilot needed was the PTT switch.

They are certainly much more common than even the C-30A/ARC-5.

But good ARA/ATA components can be hard to find. I've been working on
a 3-receiver, 2-transmitter ARA/ATA for several years and have found
it to be a lot harder process, compared to the SCR-274-N. Many items
are harder to find than the AN/ARC-5 equivalents.
