David, excellent comments.
There's only one thing I can say about the HF radio
circuits.. We used Single Sideband mode on all
our circuits, and so did the Navy. We tried FM
on a test from the west side of the US to Andrews,
but FM does not condone any fading and multipath
propagation. Trivia: Multipath, when the signal
arrives via more that one route or direction, will
produce a second image on the received map.
The distance a line on a map and its image,
and the speed at which the paper is turning under
the stylus, will indicate the time delay between the
real image and the false image. And using about
186,000 miles per second, which just happens to
be the time the drum takes for one revolution, it's
interesting to try to guess where the image got
detoured to. Oh, well.
