Hi Henry
It appears that Plain Jane neon bulbs are too slow to ionize and protect
semiconductors from ESD. The answer to the problem is neon's cousin, the Gas
Discharge Tube (GDT). Information can be found at:

I've been told that there are neon bulb protective antenna input circuits over
and above just
placing a neon bulb across the input (albeit sometimes ground-returned in
series with a variable resistor). Couldn't find these circuits in my Google
search.
I'd appreciate pointers here.
