Hello,
The WW2 IR transmitting systems I have tracked down so far are US/X-3 and US/X-9. Later, possibly up to this day, is AN/SAT-2. Receivers are WW2; US/AM, and US/C-3 (and more) and later AN/SAR-4 and SAR-6 and more. NORTH CAROLINA has an X-3 system installed. There is a different blinker key used out on the signal bridge in the weather, but the one in discussion was probably used in protected areas of the ship. The blinker key also has a big capacitor, probably to protect the contacts from inductive kick by relay, as it has been pointed out that the contacts couldn't handle much current.
US/AM is phosphor excited by radiation(makes any radio gear with radium paint look very cold by comparison). US/C-3 uses 1P25 image tube as also used in sniperscope/snooperscope. SAR-4 and SAR-6 use 6032 image tube as also used in 20,000V sniperscope.
1p25 image tube documented a bit as patent #2,506,018 Google Patents is a beautiful thing.
More documentation on my site http://www.navy-radio.com/flory/id24.html follow links to tech. info for restoration, and basic research leading to 1p25 and US/C-3.
