Taigh knows this of course as he had a working ARN 7 ADF in his last C 45
(actually a Navy SNB-2C) aircraft.

Hello Mark,
Yes, the old RC-45J had two medium sized inverters to run some of the radios
which still worked in that old Beech. It sure was cool to get a Beech that
was retired from the Navy in 1974 and still had a full set of ARC-5 gear
installed. She also had an APN-1, ARN-7, ARN-30 and an ARC-27. All of the
gear was still in place as were the radio charts and approach plates that
the last pilot had left in her. I was able to meet that pilot and take him
and his friend up flying in the Beech 31 years later. Here is a link to the
RC-45J: http://www.twinbeech.com/rc45j_29585.htm
The PV-2 is a project we all are really excited about. All of the military
gear was stripped out when she was converted to an air tanker but they did a
very nice job and didn't hack up the airframe too bad at all. She still has
a lot of small fittings and brackets in place which will make it a lot
easier to get her back to stock.
I have been collecting the radio and radar stuff and so far so good. I am
still missing some APS-3 components (decent modulator MD-5, PP-12/APS-3
rectifier, C-20/APS-3 calibrator and various shock mounts and connectors. I
figure I can make the shock mounts.
For the ARC-5 I need an MT-63/ARC-5 two receiver mount, R-28 VHF receiver,
two single receiver control heads, a set of shock mounts from Steve, misc
connectors etc.
For the APA-16 radar bombing set I still need the range marker unit
SN-12/APA-16 and mount.
It looks like the ARB stuff is complete except for shock mounts and
connectors.
We are short on AIA-2 interphone gear like the junction box and crew jack
boxes.
The PV-2 also used an APN-4 which I think I have in storage. I am surprised
because I would think such a late aircraft would have had an APN-9. Mark, If
there is some way to talk you out of your loran A signal generator let me
know. I would really like to get that set working too.
We are collecting the gear so when we start working on the interior we will
have as much ready to go. The various crew stations are going to be very
straight forward to recreate authentically. Getting the radio/radar gear up
and running will be a big challenge. Some local ham guys are coming by the
museum tomorrow to see if they can help with getting the radios up and
running. I sure need the help in that area.
I have a question for you all. The APS-3 radar uses the same frequency that
is allotted for airborne weather radar today. Doesn't that mean I should be
able to run this radar in flight without any special permits?
Should anyone want to help to get the various radios and radar working or
have any gear to donate/sell we would be very appreciative. We have a lot of
folks helping and volunteering already. We are trying to get her to the
kickoff event for the centennial of Naval Aviation celebration show at North
Island, San Diego in February. Most of the work continues on the airworthy
items to get her back into shape but I am itching to start getting the crew
stations back inside her.

My impression of the early use of 115v 400cy (pre war/early war) was for
selsyn transmitters used for instrumentation. Instead of direct reading
instrumentation where you would have to run tubing from the engines to the
cockpit they elected to use selsyn transmitters and instruments.

115 VAC at 400 hz was also used as input for the power transformers in some
WW2 aircraft nav gear such as SCR 269, ARN 7, APN 4, APN 9 etc.

In the unlikely event that anyone wants to test a LORAN A set, I have a
LORAN A signal simulator buried somewhere amidst my boatanchors.
I've been tempted to amplify the output and fire it up on the 160M band to
give the old timers a jolt, but sanity prevailed. The sound of LORAN A
signals is something the old timers on Top Band will never forget.
