The CRC-7 was indeed Korean war vintage.  And, I recall seeing a ham conversion article back in those days, but I have no idea in which publication it appeared.  Actually I found it in Vol. III of the Surplus Conversion Manual series.  Warning: The article starts with: "First, you need a sharp hacksaw...." But it does include a clear schematic.

Whilst searching for info on the CRC-7 I found a report from a  US carrier 
during Korea that mentions the CRC-7 being carried in their carrier  
aircraft.
