Back in the day I used to use this, a standard accessory found at Microsoft:
The /HyperTerminal VT100 Emulation/ protocol mimics the character set 
and control

I used to connect a PC to an RS232 port on a Data General S280  system, 
Calma layout system was one use.
It had a whopping 1 Mbyte of RAM and Dual 300 Mb wash tub disk drives.  
I also connected to a VAX 1170 and
LTX tester.  The emulator worked well, I hope this helps
