: And they don't even say Western Electric, or audiophile special.

I ran into a similar situation with Home Depot on stainless steel 
socket-head cap screws.  $3.58 in singles in a little plastic baggy, no 
manufacturers name or label, 37 cents at True Value hardware, US made with 
stamp.
