I think you are getting into a semantics game here. Consider: A transaction occurs, seller sends product, buyer sends money. eBay (the correct name construction) gets paid. In product? No. In money? Yes.
Semantics.

Yes, some sellers do that. I've seen ads with BIN of 99 cents and shipping
of $19.99 when I'm sure actual shipping cost (domestic) is in the two or
three dollar range.
And out of sight of buyers, eBay while pushing their "Free Shipping" scheme
tell sellers they can raise their selling cost to cover the cost of the
"Free" shipping.
But bottom line is that every penny that eBay makes comes from sellers.
