I know this was a concern in Bosnia but do not know if they stopped using depleted uranium in Iraq or Afghanistan? probably not a lot of armor to punch holes in there.

I found it extremely hypocritical that the Air Force worried and warned
me about the tubes, but would not even try to provide clean air for me
to live and work in. Between my roommate and the shop people, I was
gassed relentlessly. That was 40 years ago, and today I think all the
services address second hand smoke as best they can under the mission
requirements. I hated working on the audio console in the control tower,
it was totally coated with residue and stunk to high heaven. The relays
were not sealed, the condensed tar and dirt it attracted caused
intermittent contacts and endless service calls. The ashes are also
conductive, flashovers in tube sockets did happen. I'm sure today as
then, mission trumps everything and everyone else, it pretty much has to
be.
