I found it extremely hypocritical that the Air Force worried and warned 
me about the tubes, but would not  even try to provide clean air for me 
to live and work in.  Between my roommate and the shop people, I was 
gassed relentlessly. That was 40 years ago, and today I think all the 
services  address second hand smoke as best they can under the mission 
requirements. I hated working on the audio console in the control tower, 
it was totally coated with residue and stunk to high heaven. The relays 
were not sealed,  the condensed tar and dirt it attracted caused 
intermittent contacts and endless service calls. The ashes are also 
conductive, flashovers in tube sockets did happen. I'm sure today as 
then, mission trumps everything and everyone else, it pretty much has to 
be.
