Here's a possibility for museum ships that need a cash infusion every once in a while.
This sounds far-fetched, but it would work.
1. Find an Admiral or high-ranking officer that believes in preservation of museum ships.
2. Have him grant me permission to do a little salvage work on the electronics aboard certain cold war Cruisers, Destroyers, or Frigates that have certain electronics that need demilitarization. I will destroy the electronics and take the scrap material that has precious metal in it as "salary."
3. I will then have the scrap processed and when it has been processed and a settlement made for precious metal, I will set aside 35% of the net for disbursement to sponsoring museum vessels. My operating expenses (travel, lodging, food, etc) come out of the 65%, so the 35% is "pure."
I will make full disclosure of operating expenses, refining costs, and net settlement. I have done this type of salvage aboard old naval warships since 1995, so I know what I'm doing.
Just thought I'd throw this out there to you museum ship guys.
