I noticed a basic flaw in my reporting: Peking is certainly not in CBI.
I am still reading the book I quoted. So the jump teams may have
been only for China area, maybe Japan. I am aware from other
reading, no matter who officially took surrender of POW camps
in CBI, U.S. "military intelligence" ( not sure at this moment which )
had agents around CBI prison camps to keep them aware of prisoner
conditions and Japanese plans.
BTW, I don't think I have seen this argument in the pro vs con
discussions of use of nuclear weapons against Japan: the fate of
the 50,000 some Allied prisoners under Japanese control. Certainly
an invasion of Japan would have triggered the massacre of those
prisoners per the "Kill Order" which fact seems to be unknown to
those who argue against the bomb. Even a piecemeal surrender
with some units refusing to accept the conclusion, would have
meant murder of those prisoners under their control. The Emperor's
"Imperial Rescript" ( I think it was titled....) cited a "new and enormous
weapon" whose use would lead to destruction of humanity: a doubly
convincing argument leading to the prompt surrender of almost
all forces. -Hue Miller
