[Milsurplus] "More FCC Foolishness"

The "Elephant cages" are mostly gone for a specific reason. They only produce one Line of Bearing (LOB) per rotation of the goniometer. No elevation information, or very coarse information depending on which system.

Modern systems use interferometers and computer based phase comparisons, able to make both elevation and azimuth measurements at an almost instantaneous rate. And the number of channels is limited only by how many receivers, processors, and computers one wants to buy. Elevation and azimuth data, along with a few ionospheric soundings produces location data from a single DF, not requiring cross bearings from multiple sites. Tradeoff is less antenna capture area, so less sensitivity to very weak signals.

FCC made a good presentation on their present DF net at the SwRI DF conference 4 or 6 years back, but alas, it was in the classified session.

Even with the best DF gear, you only get a rough position. It eventually
comes down to sending out field personnel.

If the signal is intermittant and goes on and off randomly, it's a lot of
effort to find it.

Take a look at the pics of "elephant cages" some time.
