I agree with this, but it's taken me a few years to get there:

Fortunately the first few pieces of Command Set gear that I encountered
had already been 'converted'. I discovered by using them that the
conversions
were almost always not improvements.

Nowadays I take positive pride in taking a couple of butchered pieces of
gear and producing one (quasi)original. I have learned a lot in the
meantime,
so to me at least there is "value".
