In 1963 on Okinawa the USAF was using the BC-339
as a driver for the BC-340 10 KW transmitter. A few
came in pieces to the salvage yard, then to the MARS
station. The thing of note is that the sides of those
transmitters were of a sheet of soft aluminum held in
place with thumb screws. It was almost a quarter inch
thick, too big to bend, and difficult to hack saw. Otherwise
it made good chassis material. Trivia: The BC-340 was
water cooled, so we had a real water distillery for making
pure water. I've heard stories about the distillery, but it
wasn't all that large.
