I just looked at a couple of metal dials here. The numbers and dial
markings do not appear to be engraved or painted on. They look more like
MetalPhoto technology.
I'd try soaking them in solvent (Xylene or even Methylene Chloride w/o
other goop) and wiping them with a soft cloth. Don't breathe the stuff.
No guarantees, but the dials are not all that rare.
