Re:  British liking the Bendix.   It was us who liked Bendix
so much that Bendix built the BC-638/BC-639/BC-640/
RC-81 combination.  Where else did anyone see that
kind of coax connectors?  Mine had RAF tags along with
Signal Corps tags on them.   That equipment  was well
designed, and that's why it could survive being drug all
over Korea, and was the standard USAF VHF until the
later years.  The 24G could run so hot the grid would show
through the plate.  Not a good idea, though. 
And I suppose the 522 was a spin-off of that.   The Brits
were far ahead of us on VHF and Radar design, but the
Germans had whacked a lot of their factories.
