Apparently the military has just become VERY interested in such systems.  The cost of transporting fuel to remote locations is enormous and the supply chain is very easy to disrupt (as is happening right now in Afghanistan).

If you want to live "off the grid" they are essential.  I could easily imagine a remote cabin with a reasonable system providing light and power for a small refrigerator and radio gear costing far less than bringing power there.
