see  the iff antenna is larger than the radar antenna!
 
We have  a book on this  unit  but it will not fit on my  little scanner... 
it is a big folio thing.
 
does anyone know if it has been scanned out there somewhere?

Fred Chesson's site  says that the BC-1293 is part of AN/CPX-1, an 
air-transporable
Mark III IFF  interrogator system.

The  SCR-595-A is the most common Mark III *aircraft* transponder.   It
actually has USN nomemclature as the ABK-*, even in USAAF service.   It's
about 35 pounds and, of course, much much much smaller than the  ground
interrogator system.  The other common WWII IFF transponder was  the 
SCR-695-A,
(BC-966-A) which was a Mark III/G IFF.  Anyways, what  you have is neither
of these.
