[Milsurplus] Yalta Conference

Well, I suppose the alternative is with the
next presidential term that the rules get
changed, and there will be no more travel
for the office-holder for the entire term of
office. Everything will be done via tele-
conferencing, saving all the costs of travel.
Yea, that'll work. Make all new presidents
prisoners in The White House during their
entire term of office. OK, I agree, that
isn't going to work.

I've read the 3000+ people number and seen
an 800 hotel room number, so, it looks like
some folks will be rooming with two and
possible three roomies for this TDY mission.

Unless most of these travelers are low ranking
personnel, they aren't staying three to a room.

Also, I did a little searching around and see
the Taj Mahal Palace is fully booked for tonight,
so I could not get a room rate. I did go into
December and got a room rate for one person at
11050 INR or about $251 per night. US government
per diem for the highest location in India is
currently $389 for lodging and $126 for meals
and incidental expenses. Granted, if actual
lodging costs exceed per diem, there is authority
to pay actual lodging costs. Add one line to the
travel orders and that gets cured.

Even if it is true the US Navy has diverted 34
warships to the area, with the possible exception
of fuel to get to station, it seems the costs of
34 ships is roughly the same sitting off the coast
of India, or sitting off the coast of Hawaii.

My gut feeling, unless there are some real costs
not particularly publicized, the actual trip costs
are in the ten to fifteen million dollars per day
range. As for the personnel, the real delta costs
are overtime and per diem, plus travel, as all the
salaries are paid if everyone is at home station.

Oh, wait, news flash, I've just figured out where
the extra costs are going. The USG security folks
are paying for a blast protective tunnel for Obama.

I read it on the internet, so it has to be true, and
wasn't on The Onion page. See:

Another fine article from the press of India.
