That's probably Zinc Chromate primer. I don't think you can buy it anymore
thanks to the obamonkeys running EPA.
However, my experience with painting BC-611 and other parts the last few
years is that Rustoleum red oxide primer works well. And you don't often have
the nozzle clog problem common to zinc chromate. Bead blast or sand the
surface immediately before priming. I have no longevity figures, though.
On the subject specifically of black wrinkle finish paint, I recent got a
testimonial from a customer who had painted the cabinet of an ARB. He found
a paint new to him (and to me) at Auto Zone and another auto parts place
that didn't register (Advance Auto PArts) as there aren't any in Houston. Made
by VHT Products Co. in Cleveland, P/N SP-201. He said that it worked
great. The downside was it required oven time. However, I would suspect that
about 14:00 outdoors on a summer afternoon in either Houston or Austin might
be a reasonable substitute. I haven't tried it yet myself but it reportedly
yields a fine wrinkle, not the coarse stuff from what Pep Boys and some
others sell.
