Those are very interesting photographs, plus there are more found
in links at the bottom.
Photos 14 and 22 (both USMC tanks at Guadalcanal) and 82 (amphib
tractors) show radio antennas. I wonder what radio gear would have
equiped USMC tanks in mid-1942? I don't think the famous SCR-508-A
had made it into service (especially USMC). The WECO RU-16/GF-11
gear that the USMC bought was produced on a Apri 1941 contract, so
how likely was its use in the last half of 1942?
The Vietnam War photographic history referenced under photo 110 at
the above link is also very interesting. There are AN/PRC-25 sets
shown in use in photos 10, 50, and 57. The photos are too early
(pre-1968) for the sets to be AN/PRC-77 units. Photo 15 shows what
looks like a AN/PRC-74.
Several friends and I gathered a couple of weeks ago for an informal
commemoration at the grave of a 20-year-old 2nd Brigade, 502nd
Infantry, 101st Airborne radio operator (RTO) who was killed on
April 30, 1970, 40 years ago. He had dropped down for a break at
the side of the road and set off an anti-tank mine that had been
buried there. He was one of the 31 Americans killed in Vietnam that
day.
The service of these men, like those of the Korean War, seems in
danger of being forgotten. Sad.
