First off, they're Marines not gyrenes. Jarheads & Leathernecks
perhaps. Grunt maybe though that's also used for the Army. But if
I'm in a situation, I'd want a Marine watching my back over anyone
else bar none except maybe a SEAL, and even that's a coin flipper. I
was Navy ... and I have nothing but the highest respect for the Corps.
Anyway, the Navy & Marine Corps have a long tradition of cumshaw. I
wouldn't doubt that navies going back to ancient Greece, Rome etc
engaged in it. That and the Can Do attitude vocalized by the SeaBees
(sometimes as "The difficult we do immediately; the impossible takes a
while longer.") but found fleet wide (or it used to be - is it still?)
are two elements necessary for the smooth operation of the fleet and
related facilities. With fleet reductions and tighter inventory
control, I'm sure it has gotten a bit more difficult but sailors are
clever people and seem to always manage to acquire "necessities."
Best regards,
Michael, WH7HG ... USS HORNET, CVS-12 1963-65
