[Milsurplus] Golden years of collecting?

 Hello Peter and everyone

Actually there is a nice way of shipping large, heavy items that is relatively
cheap. A few years back I ordered a Mill Drill and stand ( weighing 800 # total)
from an online machine tool dealer--He asked if shipping cost was a concern
and I of course said Yes !!

He suggested using Freightmaster in a " Non Priority Terminal-to-Terminal "
mode where you pick up the box or crate at the local freight terminal.
Since the freight is labeled " Non Priority" , the company uses your box or crate
to fill out empty space in trucks headed in your general direction. The shipper had
mentioned that the process could take up to 2 weeks for the Atlanta to Minnesota
route but I got a call from the freight dispatcher just 5 days after I placed the order
telling me to come get the crate at the Eagan, MN terminal. Total cost was $124
which I considered to be dirt cheap for this much weight and distance. ( Note: This
was in 2002 and I would expect this to be much higher now due to higher fuel
costs !! )

I was surprised to see how many other people that were using Terminal-To-Terminal
shipping for large heavy household goods...

You do need a pickup truck or utility trailer though.....

Disclaimer: I have no financial connection to Freightmaster--Just a happy customer..

The lack of choice disturbs me. Why isn't there a depot-to-depot
service available that is much cheaper? I deliver a carload of boxes to
a major UPS/Fedex/whatever depot and each one makes it only to their
depot in whatever major city is near the destination. This eliminates
all local pickup and delivery, which is a large portion of their costs.
This would be great for heavy boatanchor thyes of equipment! Also, it
would reduce the amount of handling and thus chances for damage.

Myself, although I do pick up an occassional gem on ebay, am going to
try to get to more hamfests this year.

Peter
