John,
I always used BAX Global to ship radios (mostly surplus) from Europe,
and the UK and once from Australia. They have depots next to major
airports. Prices used to be much more reasonable than now, before all
the fuel and security surcharges. I used them last time less than 2
years ago to ship a Cold-War era (former Czechoslovakian) military
radio setup - the equivalent of our AN/GRC-19 from Germany. They used
to do shipping to and from individual persons, but now they need a
business name for the shipper and recepient (even if it's a private
address). I have a little at-home computer business, so I use that as
a reference. The same with the recipient in the UK - you'll need to
ship to a "business" of any kind. You save money if you drop it off at
the depot yourself, but thy'd pick up and transport to the depot for
rates less than UPS of FedEx. At the destination it can be picked up
at their warehouse, after the customs paperwork and release, again, it
saves transportation. I don't know how customs release works in the
UK, but here I just take the paperwork to US Customs, and pick it up
with the release stamp when it's done, then i take it back to BAX to
pick up the shipment. This saves "brokerage" fees which are ridiculous
for the same few minutes' work I can do myself...
You can look up where the nearest BAX Global office is on both ends,
on their website.
