Jones did make at least one round connector later in the century, a 2-pin.  
It was still available into at least the 60's as we used them for 
star-wheel hookup on pipeline radiography equipment before shifting over to 
MIL-C-5015..  It was constructed the same way as the 4, 6 and 8 pin ones, except 
round instead of square or rectangular.  Maybe that's what they started out 
with.
