Clete, what I was implying is that, while semi-portable
RDFs with a manually rotated loop were common in maritime
and boating use (there not being any directional maritime
beacons out in the ocean), no similar *portable* RDF loop
and receiver assembly was used on the airways. There were
many different models of simple portable beacon band
receivers that were carried during the 1930s to the 1950s
that could be used to get from place to place using the
aural A-N directional range beacons.

That's interesting, though, to hear that the A-N Adcock
beacons gave loop-based RDF receivers fits. I never gave
that any thought. I guess the nondirectional beacons made
a better target for RDFs and ADFs.
