I was in High School then, but I've always thought
the razor blade radios were developed at Anzio
in Italy during the big invasion there.
I've tried a few, and the pencil lead works better.
Better yet is a small detector diode stolen from a
radar set of the times. It can be placed inside of
one headset, (in parallel with the wires), and the
headset can be connected to a good ground and
a long wire. I've tried a piece of carborandum,
chipped from a masonry smoothing stone, but it
didn't work. I tried making Galena by mixing sulfur
and lead in a stove. The sulfur burned before the
lead would melt. Ah, the joys of being a young
experimenter. They were called Anzio Radios at
one time.
