Hi,

Thanks to everybody who replied. I got all the info I needed. I won't be
rewiring the heaters. I have two of these radios and I'm going to retube
one for the 12 volt heater string so I can take advantage of the
ubiquitous 12 volt power sources available during power
outages/emergencies. One is really an R-23 with black paint and the
other is a BC-453 with bare metal so it will be easy to tell them apart.
I'll put some kind of tape label on the back porch just to make sure.

I powered up the BC-453 for the first time since I recently got it with
24 volts AC on the heaters and about 60 volts DC on the B+. With a small
alligator clip lead for an antenna I got air noise, tunable external
electrical noise, and some weak signals. With the volume up more than
half it oscillated but even turned down there was plenty of volume in
the hi-z cans. The R-23 was working before the caps got so bad. Now I'll
get the parts ordered and get both radios back in service.

Bill KU8H
