I've never built one using other than a commercial diode.

However, some years ago there was a thread on another Group about the
properties of a Razor Blade detector. Has anybody built one and put it on
a curve tracer to see how good (or bad) a diode it really is?

IMO, a comparison between a Razor Blade and a Galena "Cat's Whister" (ie
point contact diode) detector would be very interesting indeed.
