I think that the WW2 IFF stuff was the victim of whatever "End Use Certificates" were called back then. I remember IFF was held very close during the war, and it took a while for all the restrictions to dissipate, and then for the word to get out. Like everything the government does, enforcement was uneven and erratic.

I think it would be much less frequent than every ten years
to see part of the SCR-535-A Mark II IFF set, like this BC-648-A
control box for the BC-647-A transponder.
The Mark III and IIIG IFF systems became WWII standard, using
the SCR-595-A (ABK) and SCR-695-A (ABF) sets. Even components
of those common systems are fairly rarely encountered today
in surplus.
