Yes, they can be used as controllers and displays for instruments.  I am 
hoping to acquire a couple PCs from an upgrade at work and use them to 
display the data from two Z3801A timing receivers.  I want to use an 1802 or 
Timex/Sinclair to parse and display data from a couple GPS receiver NMEA 
output messages.  Let me know if you ever want to part with your 1802 
system.
