[Milsurplus] Unknown thing

[D C *Mac* Macdonald]

It's an astro-compass, as shown on the name plate.

It was surplussed after WW II.
 
It's a forerunner of the bubble and periscopic sextants.

Google Astro Compass and you will find LOTS of info.
 
It appears that this example in NOT complete as it does
not have the sighting attachment on the top.
