Correct. The original terminals had a spike in the bottom of the crimp
trough. And the bottom of the trough is in line with the bottom surface of the
ring. I found some terminals in surplus a few years ago that do work but
the bottom of the trough is offset below the surface of the ring. When you
tighten the screws down, the back end cants up just a little.
Some NOS plugs I bought from fair 10 or so years ago (can't recall whether
they were PJ-054B or PJ-055B) came with terminals (long since robbed and
used) that were the correct shape but lacked the spike. In order to use them
you had to strip the wire. Fortunately, the wire in the common 2- and
3-conductor Signal Corps cordage used for microphone and headset cords is stranded
copper instead of tinsel.
