James -
This is about it - You can get close the break out the file;-}
From George -
I have had good luck visiting old motor repair shops which have not
yet computerized their inventory and having them bring out various
brushes of about the right size. Secondary brushes will be difficult
to match because of their relatively small cross section, but primary
brushes can usually be matched to universal motors of some ilk.
AFIK, the fit criteria is that they do not jam in the holder at
maximum temperature. Over the years, I've filed a lot to fit. And, I
use the original
springs if available. I can't imagine how one would end up with a
dyno with empty brush holders. Well, come to reconsider, these days,
yes I could.
From Jim -
See if there is a motor / generator re-builder near you go and ask some
questions. I am pretty sure that like ball bearings, brush sizes are
standard. For the most part the dynamotors were designed around common
sizes. I think that most dynamotors were made by vacuum cleaner motor
and fan manufacturers anyway. Why reinvent the technology. There was
a war to fight!
From EdZ
I'm not sure what stock he still has but Bill Donzelli, Federal
Signal and
Ironworks, had TCS spare brushes a while back. I picked up some sets for my
TCS dynos.
From Robert Downs back then:
Ed, et al,I also have some. Plus I have NOS replacement brush holders
(unlikely to
ever need those) and caps.
And if all else fails try McMaster -Carr for their brushes.
