There was also in an earlier book, maybe "The Principles Underlying Radio
Communications" ca. late 1920s - if I recall - that even discussed
transmitting
underwater. Using the fore-and-aft running wires against the hull as a loop
antenna.
However, pre-nuclear submarines didn't patrol submerged. So receiving
or transmitting while submerged would be an interesting phenomenon,
but hardly of worthwhile practical use.
Re the best WW2 era receiver: what would you prefer to copy thru
jamming? Maybe a receiver with single signal reception and a notch.
That means a crystal filter. So, if you don't have big caliber guns going
off near your radio shack, the RBB/ RBC might not be your choice.
I have always liked the variable IF coupling selectivity on the Super
Pro's. Maybe the SX-28 should also be in the running. The military
and government agencies bought a lot of them. For AM reception,
maybe the SX-28 together with the McLoughlin add-on sideband
selector, together known as the SSR-2 - and classified SECRET -
might be your choice. The FBIS certainly preferred them. I have
not seen any trance that the desk set holding both units survived.
I'm surprised no one suggested the German E-52. For serviceabilty
and frequency readout this might be tops; also a sophisticated
variable crystal filter. However the tubes were kinda equivalent
to the 12SK7, so not the last word in tubes.
