I didn't have any links to post.  All that I said was that I thought that 
the Fleet boats copied Fox on VLF while submerged.  So it's possible that the 
intent of the loops that have been mentioned was use as VLF antennas as 
opposed to DF antennas.  The distinction may be semantic but DF is a 
countermeasure, whereas straight reception isn't.  Everyone tends to assume that a 
rotatable loop antenna would only be used to determine the direction to a 
transmitter.  And tend to forget that it's also a way in which to get a large 
antenna into a small volume.
