The link that Al Klase posted answered the question of what the loop 
antennas were used for at such low frequencies.........communications 
reception while submerged, not direction finding as one might be led to 
believe.  The NRL report "Underwater Loop Reception Phenomena and 
Techniques" is a fascinating read. There were at least 2 of these loop 
systems used with the RAK; I listed the components of mine in a previous 
posting. The coupling unit that Al has is somewhat different and was used 
with the DQ loop antenna.

It would be nice to find further documentation on this.
