[Milsurplus] Re metal tubes

Thanks all,and I stand corrected.
I could swear in tech school they showed us cut aways of metal tubes showing glass liners. But memory fades with declining dollar value...
I just opened up a "trench art" cigarette lighter made from I think a 12K8 or something as all the lettering has worn off (got grid cap on top) and uses PL-151 shell to hold the cotton for the fluid.I can see down the tube body to the bottom where the pins are and there is a glass disk whetted to the metal tube body. The removeable "top" of the lighter reveals a tiny glass seal where the grid wire exits the top and on the outside a phenolic disc to support the grid cap that is crimped into a shallow well. It seems that vacuum was drawn out and sealed by closing off the teat that was then protected by the tube alignment key and pin support.
BTW this has got to be the coolest boat anchor trench art lighter ever made! Almost makes me want to smoke again just to use it!

Mike,
The metal tabs just hold the phenolic base/pin holder to the metal case.
here is a glass disk further up inside which is the wire-to-glass and
lass-to-case seal for the vacuum.
Best,
John

Interesting, I will have to try that. All my previous experience has been
that the inside of the metal shell is lined with glass, and, it is what
gives it its hermetic seal. Most metal tubes also just have 4 tabs on the
bottom part to attach them to the base, hardly enough to seal them. 73 -

Actually, that's not the case, except for some non-RCA products that
were leveraging existing technology or ducking patent issues. Just take
a hack saw to an RCA metal tube, and you'll see what I mean. The only
glass is in the seals where the wires exit the tube.
