I had assumed this was common knowledge among radio people, but I guess
only us geezers remember.
I've just posted another drawing from the 1940 RCA Receiving tube
manual: http://www.skywaves.ar88.net/Metal_Tube.png
These illustrations were true works of art. The original RCA/GE metal
tubes had individual glass seals around each lead, as shown in the
patent drawing. The 1940 drawing shows the later design where the leads
are all molded into a glass button that also incorporated the exhaust tube.
