I think the only difference between the military CU-991/AR and the
commercial 180L-3 is the type of front panel control/power connector.
But I may be wrong about the connector...my 180L-3 is in storage.

The CU-991/AR is the auto antenna tuner that goes with the AN/ARC-38
and -38A sets.  It is rated for 2 to 25 MHz.  It was also used with
later AN/ARC-94 and -102 (618T-2 and -3) sets (2 to 30 MHz) before
the wider frequency range CU-1669/AR was available.

It would make a great addition to someone's AN/ARC-38 or -102 system.
It could be made to work even with a ham rig, functioning almost like
the ham 180S-1 manual tuner, except that it would be automatic, and
limited for use below 25 MHz.
