By clamp ring do you mean the strain relief at the back end of the phone/mic plug? If so, I carefully pry these up and then carefully close them upon re-assembly.These reliefs I have also seen as "whipped" as in the "whipping" at the end of a line (rope). I have duplicated that and it is not difficult.

The olde phoneco people call the screw the "thousand line screw". And the screwdriver the "thousand line screw screwdriver". I've had one of the special screwdrivers for years, courtesey of one of the olde etc. All that I can say is that regardless of what method other than the proper tool you use, it's a bitch dealing with those little screws. Since I got the proper tool, it's just ho-hum. Now if only I could find a proper tool for removing and/or reinstalling the (usually brass) clamp ring. I'd settle for just the installer, as that's far and away the harder of the two jobs.

My little trick is to use a fine pointed tweezer, closed and inserted into the pilot hole and then released to expand and gently hold the subject un-nameable screw. With gentle and just patience,I enable the aforementioned screw through the ring terminal and into and then secured in its proper resting place.Hopefully for all eternity....
