Reenacting is theater. The best summary I've heard is from the Society for
Creative Anachronism:

"Re-living the Middle Ages, not as they were, but as they should have been"

ie: without rotten, stinking food; disease; no heat or A/C; no toilets; no
stinks; and death at 35, with luck.
