Michael,
How about a wideband crystal receiver with a tuned front end amplifier. You can have one tuned to the VHF band and the other tuner to the UHF band.
They wouldn't take much space, are inexpensive to build, and make for an interesting project.
Ramsey has a kit or assembled versions for the VHF band:
