Hi Everybody,
I snagged a second LM heterodyne frequency meter from the Bay. I got it
for a total of $35. It arrived today and was as advertised with a
built-in power supply. Not to waste any time I plugged in and it came
right up. I let it warm up a little while and then set it up to check
against WWV on 10 MC. It turns out one of the xtal set points on the LM
is 10.000 MC. Now wasn't that convenient! The old machine is spot on
(okay it's not really a laboratory grade instrument). I have been using
one of these for more than 25 years ($2 for that one!) and I was getting
scared that it might stop one day. This one is a spare. I'm already
thinking about tricks I might do with two of them to work with/against
each other. I then used it to see how badly off frequency the BFO in my
Ten Tec RX might be. No wonder the darn thing doesn't work right on USB.
The BFO is only a hundred cycles or so different on USB than when it is
on LSB - which works just dandy! I must have zigged when I should have
zagged a few days ago when I was trying to set up the BFO. I'll put one
LM on the USB BFO frequency and the other on the opposite sideband BFO
frequency and switch between the two when I address that little snafu.
So I heard from somebody on one of the lists who has a couple of these
that are salvage material. I am looking for one or two that can be used
for parts without me losing any sleep. I'm going to hunt for that email
and see if I can snag one of those. That LM tuning mechanism is a real
pleasure to use.
