Wes,

I never said nor suspected that the GRC-13 is a WW2 era radio. Just like the
GRC-9, it may have been planned/maybe a few built in 1945, but not issued
yet. I have to look at my manual copy to see whether we can learn anything
by the contract date. My feeling is that it's late '40's to very early
'50's. I don't know what year the contract number on my GRC-13/s tag
signifies: NObsr42227, and the serial number is 214. The tubes all have 1952
date codes.
The radio looks more sophisticated than the GRC-9, and it's built
beautifully. The crystal controlled 10 channel frequency setting is awkward
IMHO, stable VFO's were available and used in the field in even earlier
sets.
My GRC-13 has the following frequency channels set up (as I got it, and
they're also written on the tuning chart on the front panel): 2076, 2304,
2772, 3035, 3415, 3534, 4105 and 5540 KHz. I listened on it to some CW
activity on the 3534 channel, while my BA-48 batteries lasted...

Al & Meir, Just curious (not doubting) what's the date on the manual or
contract info? I'm surprised that the GRC-13 is WWII era as the GRC-14
manual is written in Dec of 58. Was the -14 in process that long? (I know
the process never actually panned out...) or did they not approve any
designs in 10 or more years?

Hmmmm...
