All:
Thank you very much for the information regarding that LM-13 that I wanted
to use as a VFO. As a result, I received a multitude of information,
including the power connector information, which was most valuable. Thanks!
I'm in the process of getting the parts together to make the VFO. I'm using
the March 1947 QST article and decided to use plug in coils to change
frequencies to increase the utility of the system. To that end, I was in
the process of negotiating purchasing of ceramic 4 pin sockets. The
original units from National, Millen, Amphenol, and the like seem to be
going away. Therefore, I found a source for some of the cheaper Sino made
versions. I'll be spending around 2 bucks per for a set of four but until I
can locate a reasonable source for the old stock, these will have to do.
The first set of coils will be tuned for 2.0-4.0 Mcs, like the orignal
circuit, but eventually, I will add in a 5 Mcs and 10 Mcs set of coils to
cover the frequency of my CE-20A and 30 meter CW.
As an aside, I decided to take a peek into the LM-13 to ensure all the
components were there. In the past, I had been sorely disappointed because
persons who sold me a unit didn't fully disclose that there were missing
components inside. To head off a potential problem, I cracked open the case
to do a quick inspection.
Although the outside looked fine for a piece of gear in its 70's, the inside
of the LM-13 looked like the day it rolled off the factory. It was a time
capsule. All that characteristic "musty odor" from 1945 was unleashed.
Folks, you may think I'm nuts but for a moment I was transported back to WW2
upon getting a whiff of that vintage air that was trapped inside that LM all
these years. For a moment, I thought that I heard the faint distant sounds
of Pratt and Whitney radial bomber engines, Moonlight Serenade, and news
broadcast echos of the surrender of Germany.
I think this BA stuff is getting to me!
