You make a good point.  So far as I know, a detailed, comprehensive 
technical history of the development of military radio communications 
equipment has never been written.  The more glamorous topic of radar 
development deserves all the historical attention it has gotten.  But  
the U.S. Army's use of wideband FM tactical radio sets during WWII also 
provided a great and apparently forgotten advantage over the enemy.   
The role these unique, state of the art radios played in winning the 
Battle of the Bulge, for example, is a fascinating story in its own right.
